A New Chapter for ALMA: Meet Riverbend Social in Tacoma

Some places become part of how we experience a city. We remember the show we saw there, the friend we met for coffee, or the evening that turned into something worth repeating.

For Tacoma residents who remember ALMA, there’s a new chapter to follow.

The Puyallup Tribe is reimagining the former arts and gathering space as Riverbend Social, with plans for a café, lounge, performance hall, and outdoor gathering area. The initial opening is currently targeted for spring 2027. (puyalluptribe-nsn.gov)

Building on what’s already there

The approximately 22,000-square-foot property was gifted to the Puyallup Tribe in July 2025. Its next chapter will build on the existing spaces rather than replace them entirely.

Plans preserve familiar features, including the café’s small open-mic stage. Renovations are focused on the first floor and the outdoor area adjoining the performance hall, with second-floor work planned for a later phase. (puyalluptribe-nsn.gov)

There’s something encouraging about seeing a gathering place evolve while keeping some of its character. A familiar space can still make room for new ideas, new voices, and new reasons to visit.

Food, performances, and cultural connection

The café and lounge menus are still being developed. Ideas under consideration include traditional ingredients such as salmon, huckleberries, and organic teas.

The performance space could host music, themed gatherings, and seasonal or cultural programming. These are plans in progress, with more details still to come. (puyalluptribe-nsn.gov)

Why gathering places matter

When I talk with people about living in Tacoma, the conversation often moves beyond the house itself.

Where would you meet a friend? What might become your regular coffee stop? Where could you hear live music without making an entire trip out of it?

Places that bring several of those experiences together can become part of a neighborhood’s everyday rhythm. That’s what makes this project worth following.

For now, Riverbend Social is a future destination rather than an open venue. I’m looking forward to seeing how its next chapter takes shape.
