Living in Tacoma, Washington for 15 Years… What It’s REALLY Like
If you’ve been thinking about moving to Tacoma, Washington, chances are you’ve heard a little bit of everything.
Some people will tell you Tacoma is one of the Pacific Northwest’s best-kept secrets. Others will warn you about traffic, gray weather, or rising home prices. And honestly? After living here for 15 years… both sides have some truth to them.
Tacoma is complicated in the best and worst ways.
It’s beautiful, gritty, creative, evolving, frustrating, inspiring, and deeply community-driven all at the same time.
And after spending more than a decade building a life here, raising a family here, building a business here, and watching the city transform in real time, I wanted to share the real, unfiltered truth about what living in Tacoma is actually like.
Because if you’re relocating to Tacoma, Washington, you deserve more than just the polished version.
You deserve honesty.
Before we dive in, make sure to watch the full video below for the complete story and local perspective after 15 years of living in Tacoma.
Why I Chose Tacoma 15 Years Ago
Fifteen years ago, Tacoma looked very different than it does today.
Back then, Tacoma wasn’t trendy. It wasn’t constantly showing up on “best places to move” lists. It wasn’t attracting nearly the same level of attention from out-of-state buyers and investors that it is now.
What drew me here was something simpler.
Tacoma felt real.
It had character. Creativity. Grit. Historic homes. Waterfront views. Local businesses with personality. A strong arts and music scene. And compared to Seattle, it felt attainable.
You could still buy a home without feeling completely priced out.
You could build a life here without feeling swallowed by corporate energy and nonstop hustle culture.
Tacoma felt rough around the edges in some places, but honestly… that was part of the charm.
And even now, despite how much the city has changed, that authenticity is still one of the things I love most about Tacoma.
The Best Parts of Living in Tacoma, Washington
Tacoma’s Natural Beauty Never Gets Old
This city is genuinely stunning.
One minute you’re driving through historic neighborhoods lined with giant trees and Craftsman homes, and the next you’re staring at Puget Sound with Mount Rainier sitting in the distance like a postcard.
Tacoma gives you access to outdoor living without needing to completely escape civilization.
Ruston Way, Point Defiance Park, Owen Beach, Titlow Park, the waterfront trails, nearby hiking, weekend mountain trips… it’s all part of daily life here.
Even after 15 years, there are still mornings where Tacoma catches me off guard with how beautiful it is.
The Community Here Feels Different
Tacoma still has a strong sense of community that can feel hard to find in larger cities.
People support local businesses here. They show up for neighborhood events. They care about local art, local restaurants, local musicians, local coffee shops, and local culture.
And Tacoma people are proud of Tacoma.
Not because it’s perfect… but because they’ve watched the city grow, struggle, reinvent itself, and evolve over the years.
There’s still a “we’re in this together” energy in many Tacoma neighborhoods that gives the city a very different feel from Seattle.
Tacoma’s Food and Coffee Scene Is Seriously Underrated
I truly think Tacoma’s food scene surprises almost everyone who moves here.
There are incredible local restaurants throughout the city, from waterfront seafood spots to hidden family-owned restaurants in the Lincoln District and South Tacoma.
The coffee culture is also deeply woven into daily life here.
Tacoma knows how to do cozy.
Rainy mornings with locally roasted coffee and a neighborhood café atmosphere just feel like part of the Tacoma experience.
And unlike some bigger cities, Tacoma’s food scene still feels accessible and community-centered rather than overly polished or corporate.
The Harder Parts of Living in Tacoma
Now for the honest part.
Because Tacoma absolutely has challenges too.
The Weather Can Wear On You
If you’re moving from somewhere sunny, the gray season can be tough.
The Pacific Northwest is beautiful, but the long stretches of rain, cloud cover, and dark winter afternoons are real. By February, even longtime locals can feel drained by the weather.
You learn to adapt. You invest in good jackets, cozy spaces, routines, and outdoor habits year-round.
But yes… seasonal fatigue is a very real thing here.
Crime and Safety Concerns Exist
This is one of the biggest concerns people ask about when relocating to Tacoma.
And the honest answer is that Tacoma is neighborhood-specific.
There are absolutely areas that feel safer, quieter, and more residential. And there are areas where property crime, car thefts, homelessness, and safety concerns are more noticeable.
Like many growing West Coast cities, Tacoma has experienced challenges related to housing affordability, addiction, economic pressure, and population growth.
That doesn’t mean Tacoma is unsafe everywhere.
It means you need to do your homework before choosing a neighborhood.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming all of Tacoma feels the same… because it absolutely does not.
Traffic Has Gotten Worse
This is probably one of the biggest changes I’ve seen over the last 15 years.
Tacoma used to feel much easier to navigate.
Now? Growth has changed things.
I-5 congestion is real. Commutes toward Seattle can become exhausting. Development is happening rapidly in many areas. And while Tacoma’s public transportation continues improving, many residents still rely heavily on driving.
The growth is exciting in some ways because it brings investment, restaurants, jobs, and infrastructure improvements.
But it also comes with pressure.
Tacoma is no longer the quiet hidden gem it once was.
So… Am I Leaving Tacoma?
Honestly?
Not right now.
After 15 years, Tacoma still feels like home.
This is where I built my business. It’s where I’ve built relationships, memories, routines, and community. It’s where I’ve watched neighborhoods evolve and businesses grow. It’s where I’ve learned the rhythm of the city.
Do I think about what life somewhere else might look like sometimes? Of course.
Tacoma is changing quickly, and life goals evolve too.
But for now, there’s still something about Tacoma that keeps pulling me back in.
Maybe it’s the balance of city life and nature.
Maybe it’s the people.
Maybe it’s the fact that Tacoma still feels imperfect and authentic in a way many cities no longer do.
Probably all of the above.
